The protein encoded by this gene is a preproprotein cleaved into four mature peptides.
- Glucagon: Pancreatic hormone that counteracts insulin by stimulating glycogenolysis and gluconeogenesis.
- Receptor signaling: Glucagon acts via a G-protein linked receptor controlling cell proliferation.
- Gut peptides: Two peptides secreted from gut endocrine cells promote nutrient absorption.
- Glicentin-like peptide: The fourth peptide is similar to glicentin, an active enteroglucagon.
