Target Information

Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and play a key role in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to that of prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, affecting sequence and biochemical properties. The MRPS27 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein that may interact functionally with death associated protein 3 (DAP3).
