Target Information
Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins capable of binding two Fe(3+) ions along with an anion, typically bicarbonate. Transferrin is responsible for transporting iron from sites of absorption and heme degradation to sites of storage and utilization. Under normal conditions, about one-third of total blood transferrin contains bound iron.
Measurement of blood transferrin levels serves as an indicator of iron-carrying capacity and can reveal abnormalities in iron metabolism such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
