Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens central fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are retained throughout life, making them extremely stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families; beta and gamma crystallins form a superfamily. Alpha and beta families are further divided into acidic and basic groups. Beta-crystallins differ by the presence of a C-terminal extension (present in basic group, absent in acidic group). Beta-crystallins form aggregates and can self-associate or form heterodimers with other beta-crystallins.
This gene, a beta acidic group member, encodes two proteins (crystallin beta A3 and beta A1) from a single mRNA. The beta A1 protein is 17 amino acids shorter than beta A3, generated by an alternate translation initiation site. Deletion of exons 3 and 4 causes autosomal dominant “zonular cataract with sutural opacities”.
