Himedia Medium 7. MacConkey Broth
Recommended as a selective broth for coliforms in accordance with the Indian Pharmacopoeia. Bromo cresol purple is used as the pH indicator in the medium.
Lactose-fermenting organisms produce a yellow color due to a drop in pH resulting from lactose fermentation, while lactose non-fermenting organisms such as Salmonella and Shigella do not alter the appearance of the medium.
Gas produced during fermentation is trapped in an inverted Durham’s tube.
