Target Information
Fentanyl is a synthetic, lipophilic phenylpiperidine opioid agonist with analgesic and anesthetic properties. It selectively binds to the mu-receptor in the central nervous system (CNS), mimicking the effects of endogenous opiates. Activation of the mu-opioid receptor inhibits adenylate cyclase, reducing intracellular cAMP and neurotransmitter release (substance P, GABA, dopamine, acetylcholine, noradrenaline). The analgesic effect is associated with its metabolite morphine, which modulates potassium and calcium channels, leading to neuronal hyperpolarization and reduced excitability.
