Aldolases are key glycolytic cytosolic enzymes that catalyze the reversible conversion of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate to glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate.
Mammals express three distinct aldolase isozymes—A, B, and C—encoded by separate genes:
- Aldolase A: Predominantly expressed in muscle
- Aldolase B: Liver-specific enzyme
- Aldolase C: Brain-specific isozyme expressed in astrocytes and certain neurons (e.g., Purkinje cells)
Antibodies against aldolase C are useful for identifying astrocytes in cell culture and tissue sections. Overexpression of this enzyme may occur in certain cancers.
