Target Information
The isotype of a primary antibody and the application it is used in can influence background staining. Background noise may result from Fc receptor binding, non-specific interactions with cellular components, or autofluorescence.
Isotype control antibodies serve as negative controls to distinguish non-specific background signals from specific antibody binding. They are most commonly used in flow cytometry, but are also applicable in ChIP, immunohistochemistry, and gel shift assays.
For accurate comparison, the isotype control should match the species and isotype of the primary antibody. When using labeled primary antibodies, the isotype control should ideally carry the same label.
