Target Information
This gene belongs to the MAD gene family. The MAD genes encode basic helix-loop-helix-leucine zipper proteins that heterodimerize with MAX protein to form a transcriptional repression complex.
MAD proteins compete with MYC for MAX binding; MYC-MAX complexes act as transcriptional activators, while MAD-MAX complexes act as repressors.
Rodent studies suggest that MAD genes function as tumor suppressors and play roles in regulating cell growth in differentiating tissues.
