Target Information
The protein encoded by the classic MBP gene is a major constituent of the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells in the nervous system. MBP-related transcripts are also present in bone marrow and the immune system. These arise from the long MBP gene (Golli-MBP), which contains additional upstream exons. Alternative splicing produces two sets of MBP-related transcripts — Golli-MBP hybrid proteins and classic MBP proteins. This conserved gene structure is important for functional regulation across species.
