Target Information
The EGR2 gene encodes the early growth response 2 protein, a transcription factor that binds to specific DNA regions to regulate gene expression. This protein plays a crucial role in the formation and maintenance of myelin, the protective sheath around nerve cells that ensures efficient nerve impulse transmission.
Mutations in the EGR2 gene are associated with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease types 1D and 4E, and severe forms such as Dejerine-Sottas syndrome, which can present in infancy or early childhood.
