Target Information
Cardiac Troponin I (Cardiac-specific Troponin I, TnI, Troponin I) is an integral inhibitory protein in cardiac muscle that forms a complex with Troponin C (TnC) and Troponin T (TnT).
TnT binds to tropomyosin to form a troponin-tropomyosin complex, anchored by TnI binding to actin within muscle thin filaments.
Calcium binding to the regulatory TnC subunit releases the inhibitory region of TnI from actin, enabling myosin attachment for muscle contraction.
Measurement of blood TnI and TnT levels is a key diagnostic indicator of heart muscle damage, useful for differentiating angina and myocardial infarction.
Cardiac Troponin I can inhibit angiogenesis in vivo and in vitro, and mutations in its gene cause familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy type 7 (CMH7) and familial restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM).
