Target Information
CHRNA4 encodes a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit belonging to the ligand-gated ion channel superfamily, mediating fast synaptic transmission. These pentameric receptors bind acetylcholine, inducing conformational changes that open ion channels across the plasma membrane. The alpha 4 subunit interacts with nAChR beta-2 or beta-4 to form functional receptors. Mutations in CHRNA4 are linked to nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy type 1, and certain polymorphisms confer protection against nicotine addiction.
