Target Information
Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) is expressed during embryogenesis and plays a critical role in early embryo patterning, including ventral neural tube and limb axis formation. The SHH precursor undergoes autocatalytic cleavage, producing an N-terminal signaling fragment and a C-terminal processing fragment. The C-terminal fragment attaches a cholesterol group to the N-terminal product, limiting its diffusion. Defects in SHH or its pathway can cause holoprosencephaly (HPE) and may be linked to VACTERL syndrome.
