Target Information
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These receptors are members of the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate G protein–based signal transduction of odorant molecules. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
