Also known as p44 or MTAP44 (microtubule-associated protein 44), IFI-44 is a 444 amino acid cytoplasmic protein that aggregates to form microtubular structures upon induction by IFN-β.
Human IFI-44 shares 97% sequence similarity with chimpanzee, indicating a conserved function.
The IFI-44 gene is located on human chromosome 1, which spans approximately 260 million base pairs and contains over 3,000 genes, including several associated with diseases such as familial adenomatous polyposis, Stickler syndrome, Parkinson’s disease, Gaucher disease, schizophrenia, and Usher syndrome.
