Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is a member of the intermediate filament protein subfamily, characterized by biochemical diversity represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins have molecular weights ranging from 40–68 kDa and isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8.
Each epithelial tissue expresses specific cytokeratin patterns related to tissue type and differentiation stage. These expression patterns are valuable in distinguishing epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis via immunohistochemistry and are also useful in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays.
Cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastases.
