Target Information

This gene encodes a protein that is highly expressed in cardiac and skeletal muscle. Mutations in this gene are associated with several clinical disorders, including Barth syndrome, dilated cardiomyopathy, hypertrophic DCM, endocardial fibroelastosis, and left ventricular noncompaction. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described. Both long and short forms exist; the short form lacks a hydrophobic leader sequence and may be cytoplasmic rather than membrane-bound. Additional alternatively spliced transcripts have been reported, though their full-length sequences are not fully characterized.
