Target Information

ITGB1 (Integrin Subunit Beta 1, CD29) is a 110 kDa cell surface glycoprotein expressed by various cell types including all leukocytes.

• Forms non-covalently linked heterodimers with at least six alpha chains (α1–α6), determining the binding properties of β1 (VLA) integrins.
• Functions as a cell adhesion molecule on platelets and as the common β subunit of the very late activation antigen (VLA).
• Involved in binding to extracellular matrix proteins.
• Decreased expression correlates with multidrug resistance in tumor cells.
• Upregulated in leukocytes during emigration and migration, regulating immune cell trafficking.
• Plays roles in tissue damage and inflammatory bowel disease regulation.
• Fibronectin and type I collagen enhance cytokine secretion of human airway smooth muscle via an ITGB1-dependent mechanism.
• Two major isoforms exist: β1A (ubiquitous except cardiac/skeletal muscle) and β1D (specific to cardiac/skeletal muscle).
