Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Unlike other IFPs, vimentin is co-expressed with desmin during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis regulation by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating cholesterol transport to mitochondria and enhancing steroidogenesis.
