Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It plays a role in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, co-expressed with desmin during early development, is later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. It is involved in steroid synthesis regulation through cholesterol transport within lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin leads to cytoskeletal rearrangement facilitating cholesterol movement to mitochondria, enhancing steroid synthesis.
