This antibody detects endogenous levels of total ZP2.
Target Information
The zona pellucida is an extracellular matrix surrounding the oocyte and early embryo. It consists primarily of three or four glycoproteins with roles in fertilization and preimplantation development. The protein encoded by the ZP2 gene is a structural component of the zona pellucida, functioning in secondary binding and penetration of acrosome-reacted spermatozoa. The nascent protein includes:
- N-terminal signal peptide sequence
- Conserved ZP domain
- Consensus furin cleavage site
- C-terminal transmembrane domain
Furin cleavage is hypothesized to release the mature protein for incorporation into the zona pellucida matrix, though its necessity remains controversial based on mouse studies.
