Target Information
Junctional complexes between the plasma membrane (PM) and endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulum (ER/SR) are essential for ion channel communication in excitable cells. Junctophilins (JPs) form these complexes, consisting of a hydrophobic ER/SR membrane segment and a cytoplasmic PM-binding domain.
There are four JP subtypes:
- JPH1: Skeletal muscle
- JPH2: All muscle cell types
- JPH3 / JPH4: Predominantly expressed in the brain
In the CNS, JPH3 and JPH4 contribute to subsurface cistern formation in neurons. Mice lacking both show impaired learning, memory, and abnormal nervous functions.
