Target Information
CD178 (Fas ligand, FasL) is a type-II membrane protein with its N-terminus in the cytoplasm and C-terminus extending extracellularly. Its receptor, FasR, is a member of the TNF and NGF receptor families. Interaction between CD178 and FasR induces apoptosis through receptor oligomerization.
CD178 exists in membrane-bound (45 kD) and soluble (26 kD) forms, the latter released via metalloproteinase cleavage. It is predominantly expressed in activated T-lymphocytes and NK cells, as well as immune-privileged tissues such as testis and eye. Expression has also been observed in thymus, liver, ovary, lung, heart, and kidney.
The Fas/CD178 system is involved in antiviral immune responses, immune regulation, and T cell–mediated cytotoxicity. Altered CD178 concentrations have been associated with atherosclerosis and inflammatory diseases, including hypertension. This system plays roles in various human diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, and cancer.
