Target Information

VRL-1 (also known as TRPV2) is a calcium-permeable, non-selective cation channel with outward rectification. It is regulated in part by growth factors such as IGF1, PDGF, and morphogenetic neuropeptides. Unlike other TRP channels, VRL-1 does not respond to capsaicin, acid, or moderate heat but is activated by high temperatures (threshold ~52°C).
Within sensory ganglia, VRL-1 is expressed in medium- to large-diameter neurons, suggesting a role in high-threshold heat response. It is also expressed beyond the sensory nervous system, implying activation by additional stimuli. VRL-1 is one of six members of the vanilloid-like TRP channel family, now classified as the TRPV family.
