This antibody detects endogenous levels of total NEK8.
Target Information
NEK8 (NIMA-related kinase 8) is a serine/threonine kinase related to NIMA of Aspergillus nodulins and may play a role in cell cycle progression from G2 to M phase. NEK8 forms part of a complex of ciliary proteins required for renal and cardiovascular development. It interacts with polycystin signal transduction pathways and may control the targeting of these ciliary proteins. NEK8 is required for renal tubular integrity and may regulate local cytoskeletal structure in kidney tubule epithelial cells as well as ciliary biogenesis through protein targeting to the cilia.
Defects in NEK8 are associated with nephronophthisis type 9 (NPHP9, MIM:613824), an autosomal recessive disorder causing end-stage renal disease characterized by tubulo-interstitial kidney modifications, basement membrane thickening, interstitial fibrosis, and medullary cysts in advanced stages.
