Target Information
The LARGE gene encodes a member of the N-acetylglucosaminyltransferase gene family. It produces a glycosyltransferase involved in glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan and synthesis of glycoprotein and glycosphingolipid sugar chains.
Mutations in this gene cause MDC1D, a congenital muscular dystrophy characterized by severe mental retardation and abnormal glycosylation of alpha-dystroglycan.
Alternative splicing results in two transcript variants encoding the same protein.
