Target Information

The KIR (inwardly rectifying potassium channel) family allows greater potassium influx into cells than efflux.
KIR4.1 (also known as Kir1.2) is highly expressed in the brain, including glial cells, astrocytes, and cortical neurons.
It is also found in myelin-synthesizing oligodendrocytes and plays a crucial role in myelination during nervous system development.
The human KIR4.1 gene maps to chromosome 1.
KIR4.2 (Kir1.3) is expressed in kidney, lung, heart, thymus, and thyroid during development and maps to chromosome 21, potentially linked to Down syndrome pathogenesis.
KIR5.1 forms functional channels only by coexpression with KIR4.1 or KIR4.2 in kidney and pancreas.
