Target Information
CD16 encodes a receptor that recognizes the Fc portion of immunoglobulin G and participates in the clearance of immune complexes from circulation. It also mediates cellular cytotoxicity and enhances viral infection susceptibility.
The gene FCGR3A is highly similar to FCGR3B, both located on chromosome 1.
- FCGR3A: Expressed on natural killer (NK) cells, anchored via a transmembrane peptide.
- FCGR3B: Expressed on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN), anchored via a phosphatidylinositol (PI) linkage.
Mutations in FCGR3A are associated with Immunodeficiency 20 and susceptibility to viral infections, systemic lupus erythematosus, and alloimmune neonatal neutropenia.
Alternative splicing results in multiple isoforms.
