Target Information
Elliptocytosis is a hematologic disorder characterized by elliptically shaped erythrocytes and varying degrees of hemolytic anemia. It is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait and results from mutations in genes encoding red cell membrane skeleton proteins. The form discussed here is linked to the Rh blood group and caused by a defect in protein 4.1.
“Rh-unlinked” forms of elliptocytosis are caused by mutations in the alpha-spectrin, beta-spectrin, or band 3 genes.
