Target Information
Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase that functions autonomously after Ca(2+)/calmodulin-binding and autophosphorylation. It is involved in dendritic spine and synapse formation, neuronal plasticity, and regulation of sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+) transport in skeletal muscle. In neurons, it plays a structural role in actin cytoskeleton reorganization, essential for proper targeting of CaMK2A, which promotes dendritic spine formation and synaptic plasticity, enabling long-term potentiation and hippocampus-dependent learning. In skeletal muscle, it modulates Ca(2+) transport and release through phosphorylation of triadin and phospholamban.
