Target Information

Telomerase is a ribonucleoprotein polymerase that maintains telomere ends by addition of the telomere repeat TTAGGG.
The enzyme consists of a protein component with reverse transcriptase activity (encoded by the TERT gene) and an RNA component that serves as a template for telomere repeat synthesis.
Telomerase expression is normally repressed in postnatal somatic cells, leading to progressive telomere shortening and cellular senescence. Deregulation of telomerase expression may contribute to oncogenesis.
Studies in mouse indicate telomerase may also participate in chromosomal repair through de novo synthesis of telomere repeats at double-stranded breaks.
Multiple alternatively spliced variants of TERT have been identified, with some full-length sequences yet to be determined. Alternative splicing at this locus may regulate telomerase activity.
