VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor)는 45 kDa의 호모다이머성 이황화 결합 당단백질로, 혈관신생(angiogenesis)을 촉진하여 종양의 성장과 전이에 중요한 역할을 합니다.
VEGF는 내피세포의 생존, 유사분열, 화학주성, 혈관 투과성 증가 등 다양한 생리적 효과를 유도합니다.
VEGF 패밀리에는 VEGF-A, VEGF-B, VEGF-C, VEGF-D, VEGF-E, PIGF가 포함됩니다.
이들은 tyrosine kinase 수용체 FLT1(VEGFR-1)과 FLK1/KDR(VEGFR-2)에 결합하며, 주로 내피세포에서 발현됩니다.
VEGF 및 그 수용체 시스템은 혈관신생의 세포 신호 조절에 핵심적인 역할을 하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
또한, FLT1의 대체 스플라이싱 형태인 sFLT1은 VEGF에 높은 친화도로 결합하여 혈관신생을 억제하는 역할을 합니다.
