Target Information

This gene belongs to the protocadherin gamma gene cluster, one of three related clusters on chromosome 5. These clusters have an immunoglobulin-like organization, suggesting a unique regulatory mechanism.
The gamma gene cluster includes 22 genes divided into three subfamilies:

• Subfamily A: 12 genes
• Subfamily B: 7 genes and 2 pseudogenes
• Subfamily C: 3 genes

Each variable region exon encodes the extracellular region with six cadherin ectodomains and a transmembrane region, while the constant region encodes the common cytoplasmic region.
These neural cadherin-like cell adhesion proteins likely play a role in the formation and function of specific cell-cell connections in the brain. Alternative splicing has been observed in the gamma cluster genes.
