Target Information
PGP9.5 (Protein gene product 9.5, also known as UCH-L1 or PARK5) is a neuron-specific protein distinct from neuron-specific enolase. It has a molecular weight of 27 kDa and is part of the ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase family (peptidase family C12). PGP9.5 exhibits both ubiquitin hydrolase and ligase activities, generating ubiquitin monomers from small C-terminal adducts.
PGP9.5 is expressed in neurons and nerve fibers throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in neuroendocrine cells, renal tubules, spermatogonia, Leydig cells, and ovarian tissues. Overexpression is associated with non-small cell lung cancer, while reduced expression is linked to Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s diseases. Due to its presence in neuronal inclusions, PGP9.5 serves as a valuable neuronal marker for studies on neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s disease.
