Target Information

Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein identified as a component of cell-cell adhesion structures. AJs are essential for the formation and maintenance of epithelial cell layers by regulating cell growth and adhesion. Beta-catenin interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin, anchoring the E-cadherin complex to the cortical actin cytoskeleton. It also binds to cytoskeletal complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, and participates in signaling pathways involving tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.

Beta-catenin is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and plays a role in morphogenesis and tumorigenesis. Pathological roles have been identified in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, it co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, stimulating genes such as cyclin D and c-myc that promote cell proliferation.
