Target Information
This gene encodes a mitochondrial matrix protein belonging to the Lon family of ATP-dependent proteases. It mediates selective degradation of misfolded, unassembled, or oxidatively damaged polypeptides in the mitochondrial matrix. It may function as a chaperone in inner membrane protein complex assembly and participate in regulation of mitochondrial gene expression and maintenance of mitochondrial genome integrity. Decreased expression has been reported in a patient with hereditary spastic paraplegia. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
