Target Information
Sulfation is a common modification of endogenous compounds such as lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates, as well as exogenous compounds like xenobiotics and drugs. In mammals, the sulfate source is 3'-phosphoadenosine 5'-phosphosulfate (PAPS), synthesized from ATP and inorganic sulfate. Two different tissue isoforms encoded by separate genes synthesize PAPS. The PAPSS2 gene encodes one of these synthetases. Defects in this gene are associated with the Pakistani type of spondyloepimetaphyseal dysplasia. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
