Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack the 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary greatly among species, both in sequence and biochemical properties, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL9 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located at 8q21.11.
