Target Information
BAX is a member of the Bcl-2 family and plays an important role in the regulation of apoptosis. Bcl-2 acts as an anti-apoptotic protein, while BAX has a pro-apoptotic function. Apoptosis regulation involves both homo- and heterodimerization of BAX and Bcl-2 isoforms.
The Bax gene encodes isoforms Bax alpha (21 kDa) and Bax beta (24 kDa). Both contain BH1, BH2, and BH3 domains, but Bax beta has a unique C-terminus and lacks a hydrophobic transmembrane domain.
Bcl-2 also exists in different isoforms, including Bcl-2 alpha (26 kDa) and Bcl-2 beta (22 kDa), which differ in the 3’ UTR and coding region. Overexpression of BAX promotes cell death through dimerization with other BCL-2 family proteins.
