Target Information
Machado-Joseph disease (MJD), also known as spinocerebellar ataxia-3, is an autosomal dominant neurologic disorder caused by expansion of (CAG)n repeats in the Ataxin-3 coding region (from normal 13–36 to 68–79). The disease shows a negative correlation between age of onset and repeat number.
Ataxin-3 interacts with transcription regulators (CBP, p300, PCAF), acts as a histone-binding protein, and functions as a deubiquitinating enzyme.
