Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by remarkable biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and in isoelectric pH between 4.9–7.8. Individual human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20.
The expression patterns of cytokeratin subtypes are characteristic of specific epithelial types and are related to the degree of maturation or differentiation within an epithelium. These patterns are valuable in distinguishing various epithelial malignancies. Cytokeratin antibodies assist in differential tumor diagnosis using immunohistochemistry and are useful tools in cytopathology and flow cytometry assays. Notably, cytokeratin 19 is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastases.
