Target Information
Proteins of the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix in normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes including arthritis and metastasis. Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins which become active when cleaved by extracellular proteinases. The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the membrane-type MMP (MT-MMP) subfamily, containing a transmembrane domain that suggests cell surface expression rather than secretion. This protein activates MMP2 and may play a role in tumor invasion.
