Target Information
The plasma membrane calcium pump (PMCA ATPase) functions to export calcium from the cytosol to the extracellular space. PMCA belongs to a family of membrane-bound ATPases, including SERCA and Na⁺/K⁺ pumps. Four genes encode PMCA ATPase, and alternative splicing generates up to 20 isoforms. Gene products 1 and 4 are broadly expressed, while 2 and 3 are more tissue-specific. In the pancreas, β cells express only the 4b isoform, while α and γ cells express both 4a and 4b. Different splice variants show distinct affinities for calcium and calmodulin.
