ADAMs (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain), also known as MDCs (metalloproteinase, disintegrin, and cysteine-rich domain) or cellular disintegrins, are a family of membrane-anchored proteins expressed in numerous tissues. They are involved in proteolysis, adhesion, fusion, and intracellular signaling.

ADAM23 is expressed exclusively in fetal and adult brain and may function as an integrin ligand in neural cells. Adhesion of neuroblastoma and astrocytoma cells is promoted by the disintegrin-like domain of ADAM23 through interaction with αvβ3 integrin. Although ADAM23 contains a metalloproteinase-like domain, it lacks the typical catalytic residues, suggesting a role in cell adhesion rather than protease activity. Evidence also suggests ADAM23 may act as a tumor suppressor gene.
