Influenza A와 B는 인플루엔자 유행성 질환을 일으키는 두 가지 주요 바이러스 유형입니다. 현재 유행 중인 Influenza B 바이러스는 항원적 및 유전적으로 구분되는 두 계통(Victoria, Yamagata lineage)으로 나뉩니다. Influenza B 바이러스는 Orthomyxoviridae과에 속하며, 제한된 숙주 범위를 가지므로 팬데믹 발생은 드뭅니다. 핵단백질은 음성가닥 바이러스 RNA를 캡시드화하여 뉴클레아제로부터 보호하며, 캡시드화된 RNA는 전사 및 복제의 주형으로 작용합니다.
