Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in a subset of T-lymphocytes (T helper cells) and may also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. At the tissue level, CD4 expression is observed in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain regions of the brain and gut. CD4 assists in initiating or augmenting early T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck. It may also play a role in neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
