Target Information
Anti-sperm antibodies are correlated with unexplained infertility, suggesting their role in blocking fertilization. Identification of sperm antigens is crucial for diagnosing and treating immunologic infertility and developing targeted contraception.
The SPAG1 protein is recognized by anti-sperm agglutinating antibodies from infertile women. Immunization with recombinant human SPAG1 reduces fertility in female rats.
This protein localizes to the plasma membrane of germ cells in the testis and post-acrosomal plasma membrane of mature spermatozoa. It binds GTP and exhibits GTPase activity, potentially regulating GTP signal transduction in spermatogenesis and fertilization.
Two transcript variants encode the same protein.
