Target Information
CD59 (Protectin) is a small (18–20 kDa) GPI-anchored protein ubiquitously expressed as an inhibitor of the membrane attack complex (MAC). It protects autologous cells from complement-mediated lysis by binding complement components C8 and/or C9, preventing pore formation. CD59 also interacts with CD2, promoting T cell costimulation and signal transduction. Mutations in CD59 can lead to deficiency associated with hemolytic anemia, thrombosis, and cerebral infarction. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
