- Lactose fermentors (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes) change the color of the medium from purple to yellow due to acid production.
Gas produced during fermentation is trapped in the Durham’s tube as a bubble. - Lactose non-fermenting organisms (e.g., Salmonella, Shigella) do not alter the appearance of the medium.
